Special Seed Helps Prevent Heart Disease and Diabetes

Black seed has been used for thousands of years to flavor bread and treat ailments across the Middle East and South Asia. Home cooks have long utilized black seed, even before the term “superfood” was coined. Despite its long history, Western medicine has only recently begun to recognize the benefits of black seed.

Researchers have now compiled the largest body of clinical evidence on black seed, with three specific benefits standing out. These benefits include improving cholesterol numbers, lowering blood pressure, and controlling blood sugar levels.

Researchers from multiple Iranian universities combined results from 82 randomized controlled trials, covering 5,026 participants. The review, published in Pharmacological Research, found that black seed supplementation improved cholesterol markers, including LDL and total cholesterol, while also increasing HDL cholesterol.

The amounts of black seed used in the trials ranged from 200 milligrams to 4,600 milligrams per day. The strongest effects were seen at higher amounts and over longer periods.

Lowering Blood Pressure

The same review found that black seed also improved blood pressure, making it a promising adjunct for supporting heart health. The review spanned 16 years of trials, giving the conclusion more weight than any single study.

Reduced blood pressure and improved cholesterol tend to move together in cardiovascular research, suggesting that black seed may have a genuine effect on heart disease risk.

Black seed’s ability to influence both blood pressure and cholesterol may be due to its anti-inflammatory properties. By reducing inflammation, black seed may help to mitigate the risk of heart disease.

Controlling Blood Sugar

A separate review focused on people with type 2 diabetes found that black seed improved several cardiometabolic markers, including fasting blood sugar. A pediatric study also found cardioprotective effects in children with type 1 diabetes.

Older research found that black seed supplementation reduced an inflammatory marker tied to insulin resistance in overweight and obese women. This reduction in inflammation may help to explain why black seed shows up in both bodies of research.

One of the key benefits of black seed is its ability to reduce inflammation, which is a major risk factor for heart disease. By incorporating black seed into one’s diet, individuals may be able to reduce their risk of heart disease and improve their overall health.

To start using black seed in your diet, try stirring black seed oil into food, such as salad dressing or hummus. A teaspoon mixed into food can help to mask the strong, slightly bitter flavor. Cold applications preserve more of the beneficial thymoquinone compound than high-heat cooking.

Choose cold-pressed oil or whole seeds over capsules when possible. Whole black seeds can be toasted lightly and sprinkled over bread or roasted vegetables for a peppery, oregano-like flavor. Refrigeration after opening extends freshness significantly.

Give black seed several weeks before expecting to see changes. Most trials showing meaningful improvements ran eight weeks or longer, with some extending to a full year. Pairing black seed with an already healthy diet produced the clearest results across the research reviewed.

While black seed may have several benefits, it is essential to note that it is not a full heart strategy. Heart disease rarely comes from a single cause, and diet, gut health, toxin exposure, and stress all feed the same cardiovascular burden that black seed only partly addresses.

No single seed, however impressive the data, can rebuild a heart that has been under strain for years. A full approach to heart health is necessary, taking into account various factors, including diet, lifestyle, and overall well-being.
